Do you like sports? At OCS we have a large array of athletics. We are a competitive community; we love celebrating our wins in our school. Elania, a 6th-grade student, volleyball, and basketball player at OCS, said, “We celebrate wins with lots of cheering and dancing.” Mrs. Rand, a 6th- and 5th-grade volleyball coach and OCS parent, shared with us her view about the competitiveness of our athletes. “Our players are competitive in the classroom and that carries over to the court and playing field.” I think that it is so cool that when we win an award, the office announces the win on the intercom, so that the whole school can celebrate.
We have many wonderful coaches who enjoy coaching sports at Overbrook. Volleyball coach and OCS parent, Coach Caldwell said, “I enjoy teaching the sport and watching the team improve. The Overbrook Eagles work so hard in practice, so it is great to see them rewarded with a win on game day." Athletic Director and P.E. Coach, Bryan Miller, helps coach all athletics, especially cross country. Coach Miller said, "Being a coach at Overbrook is a commitment to two to five days per week of planning and implementing practice plans, running practices, and coaching games in various sports. Coaches can be parents, myself, or outside coaches who are passionate about teaching the sport, allowing our OCS students to have fun and challenge themselves to be the best they can be. I love coaching! For me it is a joy to be a coach, and figure out ways to motivate, challenge, encourage, and teach a sport to our eagles.’’ We have coaches coaching kids between preschool to sixth grade.
Athletes at OCS know it is a mental game. Mmesoma, a 6th-grade basketball player and cheerleader, said, “I feel excited to help my team be the best they can possibly be!’’ Different people have different emotions during games or meets. Some emotions might be disappointment if you lost or proud if your team won! One thing I love about my team is all the support we give each other on the court. We encourage each other, give each other tips, and comfort each other if we lose. According to Finley, a basketball and volleyball player, “It is amazing, especially at Overbrook, that the community and teammates make it fun and encouraging. The whole team gets a rush when someone does something great. I think that is the best ‘’
At Overbrook we have many sports, and some things about our sports that make them super fun and beneficial. Specifically, the confidence it builds. John, a sixth-grade cross country runner, said, “Running a race is hard, but once you do it repeatedly your confidence builds up.’’ When I play in a volleyball game, I use the confidence that I built during practice and apply that to games to help my team do well. I hope that the things I've talked about helped you get a better view of sports at Overbrook!
