OCS sixth grader Nikolas reflects on the fruits of Beyond the Brook Farm.
Have you ever wondered what the barn and garden area were? Well, it is our Overbrook farm, home to the sheep, chickens, and bunnies. The garden provides healthy and natural food for the community with the rest, including other vegetables, given to the animals.
The Beyond the Brook Farm has been in our hearts for a long time and has improved over the years. It is a holy landmark allowing teachers to bring out their students to learn about the farm and to help keep it clean. Students learn how to garden and tend to the animals. “Students can garden because it’s important to know how to take care of plants,” Liam, a sixth grader, states. It is a particularly good learning environment for young students and a wonderful place to get fresh air.
The school helps to fund resources for the farm so it can keep serving students. The farm also helps advertise OCS. It has been an important part of Overbrook since 2017, so most of the teachers and students know it well. Our teachers bring kids to the farm every day. Sixth grader Maddie explains, “I see students and teachers on the farm all the time! It shows OCS takes care of our farm.” “I see so many classes across The Dominican Campus come to admire God’s beauty in our gardens and animals,” says Dr. Gigi Diffenback, STEM Facilitator.
Our farm has two sheep, many chickens, and two bunnies. Fourth grader Ava states, “Dr. Diffenback teaches about the habits and anatomy of the animals.” Students learn how the plants grow and prosper through different weather and seasons. Our sheep are named after two wonderful saints, Cosmas and Damian.
For new students or teachers at Overbrook Catholic, I hope you know about how the farm brings us closer to nature and God. Our farm is a particularly important part of our hearts and school.
