OCS fifth grader Sophie shares reflections from Eagle athletes.
Let’s go, Eagles! My name is Sophie, and I am a current 5th grade student at Overbrook Catholic School. I participate in soccer, basketball, and track at OCS. Athletics are important because they help us work on the virtues of teamwork and sportsmanship. We have so many sports to offer!
Eagle Athletics is an amazing experience, especially with great coaches and teammates. Our basketball teams start in 3rd grade. In basketball, we practice the virtue of teamwork by helping each other on the court. Dudley, a current 3rd grader, is excited to start basketball this year. He said, “I am excited to play basketball for Overbrook because we get to challenge other schools.” I also interviewed Christopher Rand, our varsity basketball coach. Coach told us, “I originally wanted to coach basketball to spend more time with my daughter, Finley. After I began coaching, I realized that I really enjoyed getting to know her friends and loved the process of teaching the game.”
Along with basketball, we also have two volleyball teams at OCS. I interviewed Kinsley, a 5th grader on the varsity team, who said, “I experience the virtues of patience and encouragement during volleyball. I experience them when someone misses the ball. We have to be patient with them and encourage them that they can get better.” Katie Rand, the volleyball coach, said, “I have played volleyball since I was a kid, and I just always had a passion for it. I want to help the girls find their love for the sport and grow in their skill.” The volleyball team started off strong this season with two wins against Ensworth and Harpeth Hall.
There are many other sports at OCS such as cross country, track and field, flag football, golf, and soccer. The soccer teams start in 4th grade and go up to 6th grade. I interviewed Liam, a 6th grader at OCS. He said, "I love soccer because it is a fun sport! In soccer, we practice the virtues of leadership, patience, and teamwork. It is important to have soccer at OCS to practice these virtues.” Ms. Emily Shore, the 5th and 6th grade Religion teacher, and the 4th – 6th grade soccer coach, said, “I have noticed that our students love sports, and that they are very talented in the sports they play. Sports are a way to recognize the human dignity in all people.” I think you should participate in OCS athletics if you love to be active. We not only play, but we practice, we get better, and we win!
