Terrific Teachers

OCS sixth grader, Juliette, celebrates teachers new to OCS.

Overbrook Catholic School received new additions to faculty and staff this school year, and I want to help you get to know these new teachers. Here is a peek at what some of them do in their daily lives at school. 

We have lots of amazing new teachers at OCS this year. Ms. Emily Shore teaches 5th and 6th grade Religion, and she teaches her homeroom class Literature. Before she was a teacher, Ms. Shore was a social worker for Children’s Services and lived in Ohio. Mrs. DeAnn McDowell is the art teacher this year. She used to teach art in West Tennessee, but she retired in 2018. “What I like about Overbrook is how it feels like a warm community,” Mrs. McDowell says. Why would these teachers choose to teach at Overbrook? Ms. Shore says, “I have always loved the opportunity to share the faith, as well as getting to spend time with the Dominican Sisters.” Ms. Naomi Westbrook shares, “My favorite part of teaching is building relationships with my students and giving them opportunities to explore more about themselves and their passions within the classroom.” Mrs. Teresa Leon, the Vice Principal, left OCS two years ago, but returned. Why? “I missed Overbrook and wanted to reconnect with the teachers, friends, families and community here,” she says. 

The teachers clearly love Overbrook, but what does Overbrook think about them? Sixth-grade Student Council representative Emily says, “Ms. Shore is an awesome teacher! Even in her first year teaching, she is a great teacher and is super fun!” According to fifth grader Liza, “Ms. Shore is really nice and is a great addition to our school.” Ms. Westbrook teaches fourth grade. Dax, one of her students, says, “She makes math and all our subjects fun!” Second grader Carlito likes Mrs. McDowell, the art teacher. Carlito says, “I like Mrs. McDowell because she gives us fun art projects to do.”  

As you can see, our teachers are wonderful. They’re great at their jobs, and our students love them. These wonderful teachers help make Overbrook Catholic School a better place for our Overbrook families. Thank you, teachers!
